The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Thursday against Maryland and Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown over the state’s sanctuary policies, which it says interfere with the federal government’s enforcement of immigration laws.

“When sanctuary jurisdictions enact laws to shield illegal aliens from federal law enforcement, it is not merely federal law that is violated, but the voices of everyday American voters are silenced,” Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward said in a news release announcing the suit. “Today’s suit proves that this Department will never stand for such lawless action from blue state leaders.”

In the lawsuit, the department claims Maryland’s sanctuary policies are illegal under federal law and argues Maryland is obstructing federal law enforcement when agencies refuse to help transfer people suspected of having entered the country illegally into federal custody.

This is the latest suit in a series the Justice Department has launched against states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois and New York.

Maryland’s Office of the Attorney General did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
