Rays stay alive in World Series with walkoff win over Brewers in 12th

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Down three games to none in the World Series, with the Brewers and history against them, the Rays talked a lot going into Tuesday night about how all they were focused on was winning that night’s game.
“We’ve just got to go 1-0,” leftfielder Chandler Simpson said.
Mission accomplished, and in dramatic fashion, as the Rays walked off the Brewers 4-3 in the 12th inning. Jonny DeLuca singled in the tying run, and pinch-hitter Ben Williamson added the game-winner with a single to right.
Now they can move on to the next goal — going 1-0 again on Wednesday in Game 5 and sending the Series back to Milwaukee for Game 6 on Friday.
The challenge is still significant, but the Rays certainly compiled some confidence by playing their best overall game of the series.
None of the 25 teams that fell behind 3-0 in best-of-seven World Series came back to win and only four even forced a Game 5. In all best-of-seven baseball playoffs, only one of the 43 teams down 3-0 came back to win, the 2004 Red Sox against the Yankees.
Down 3-2 after Cooper Pratt’s leadoff homer in the top of the 12th off Ian Seymour, the Rays’ rally started when Junior Caminero grounded to third and reached on an errant throw by Joey Ortiz. Facing lefty Shane Drohan, lefty Liam Hicks singled to left, sending Caminero to third.
DeLuca delivered the tying run with a single to center, scoring pinch-runner Cedric Mullins. Chandler Simpson showed bunt, then singled hard to center, advancing pinch-runner Nick Fortes to third. Williamson took it from there.
