SAN JOSE — Waymo is rolling its driverless car service deeper into the South Bay.

On Wednesday, the Mountain View-based company, which was already serving central San Jose, started picking up riders in the San Jose neighborhoods of Willow Glen and Vista Park, as well as the West Valley cities of Campbell and Cupertino.

The expansion adds roughly 60 square miles of coverage, bringing the company’s Bay Area footprint to more than 330 square miles, Waymo said in a statement to the Bay Area News Group.

The move is part of a broader national push. In the coming weeks, the company plans to grow its service in several other cities, including Atlanta, Houston and Austin. Its total service area will cover more than 1,400 square miles across 11 cities.

The company said the larger footprint will benefit cities like San Jose as they prepare to host major global events like the FIFA World Cup in the coming weeks.

“Waymo is coming to more riders both near and far,” Waymo Senior Product Lead Shweta Srivstava said in a statement. “Our ‘land and expand’ approach allows us to connect with more neighbors – ensuring we are there to support riders for everything from daily commutes and local errands to exciting nights out and the big game.”

The company also has plans to serve Alameda and Contra Costa counties, but did not have any concrete dates to share Wednesday on any possible expansion to the East Bay, said Waymo spokesperson Sandy Karp.
